Discovery
Bromine was discovered by a young French student, Antoine-Jérome Balard in 1826. He first isolated the element by adding chlorinated water to the slightly salty water he found in salt marshes near Montpellier. This formed the new element Bromine.

Bromine is obtained from natural brine deposits. Some is extracted from seawater.
